Yankees Barely Edge Scuffling Rangers

Freddy Garcia got the start for the Yankees tonight in what turned out to be a game with a rain delay of close to two hours. When the game actually started, Garcia was rolling. Garcia left the game with a final line of Yankees-3, Hamilton-2. Other than the two home runs that Garcia served up to Josh Hamilton, he was brilliant for 6.2 innings. Garcia struck out six batters and allowed only four hits in his outing. When two of your top starters go down to injuries, it is important for the pitchers in their place to pick up the slack for the rest of the team. Garcia has been one of two pitchers who has done his job after taking Andy Pettitte's spot in the rotation. Garcia won his seventh game of the year tonight after not being able to buy a victory in the month of April. That is huge for the Yankees who did not lose faith in a broken Garcia in April and May. They stuck with him through his rough start and Garcia rewarded the Yankees with his seventh win of the year tonight.

The Yankees offense did not manage much against Texas pitching tonight but managed to do enough as they scored three runs to the Rangers two runs. Eric Chavez continues his hot hitting by him picking up another three hits on the night. Girardi left him in to face a lefty in the eighth inning and it paid off as he collected a single. Swisher accounted for one of the runs with a bloop RBI double and Granderson had a sac fly.

The Yankees have won their third straight and have now won seven of their last eight games. They have won all three against a Rangers team that was considered the favorite to go to the World Series for a third consecutive time. The Yankees will go for the four-game sweep of the Rangers tomorrow afternoon, something that would give the Yankees another burst of energy for sweeping four games against such a dominant team. Ivan Nova will make the start for the Yankees after his last start against Toronto was a great one. The Yankees will square off against Derek Holland, who has been up-and-down all year.
