Clutch hits were the reason the Yankees won tonight's game. They hit five home runs in the 6-4 win with the biggest blow coming off Derek Jeter's bat to tie the game and also give him 250 career home runs. The captain keeps hitting and the Yankees keep winning as a byproduct of his renaissance season. Nick Swisher, who has been hot lately kept his hot streak going by homering twice in the game. He hit home runs from both sides of the plate, marking the twelfth time in his career he's done that. Mark Teixeira is the all time leader in that category with 13 multi-homer games from both sides of the plate. Jayson Nix gave the Yankees the lead with his sixth inning RBI single with men on first and third with two outs.
Phil Hughes gave the Yankees a resilient outing by going seven innings and allowing no earned runs. In the fourth inning, Hughes committed an error which allowed Pedroia to come up with two men on and drill a three-run home into the left field seats to tie the game at the time. Hughes buckled down after that and retired thirteen of his last fifteen batters to earn his twelfth win of the season.
Tomorrow, David Phelps will make his first career start against the Boston Red Sox. Jon Lester will go against the Yankees who look unbeatable right now.
